Outdoor education plays an important role in the development of students at The English School of Ulaanbaatar. Through outdoor learning experiences, students develop confidence, resilience and a spirit of adventure while building strong relationships with their peers.

The natural environment surrounding Mongolia provides exceptional opportunities for students to explore the outdoors, develop practical skills and learn through real-life experiences.

Outdoor education activities encourage students to step beyond the classroom, challenge themselves and develop qualities such as teamwork, independence and leadership.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is one of the world’s leading youth development programmes and forms an important part of the outdoor education opportunities at ESU.

The award encourages students to challenge themselves in a range of areas including personal development, community service, physical activity and outdoor adventure.

The programme includes four key elements:

• Volunteering – contributing to the community through service activities

• Physical Activity – improving fitness and developing sporting skills

• Skills Development – learning new practical or creative skills

• Expeditions – planning and completing outdoor journeys as part of a team

Through the expedition element, students develop navigation, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills while exploring Mongolia’s remarkable landscapes.

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provides students with valuable life experiences and is highly respected by universities and employers around the world.

The programme supports the development of confident, capable young people who are prepared to face new challenges and make positive contributions to their communities.
