Sixth Form (Key Stage 5)
The Sixth Form at The English School of Ulaanbaatar represents the final stage of secondary education and prepares students for entry to leading universities around the world.
Sixth Form students follow the internationally recognised A-Level pathway, one of the most respected academic programmes for university preparation. The programme allows students to specialise in a small number of subjects that align with their academic interests and future career ambitions.
The Sixth Form programme is designed to develop:
• Deep subject knowledge
• Independent thinking and research skills
• Academic discipline and intellectual curiosity
• Leadership and responsibility within the school community
Students typically study three to four subjects in depth over two years, allowing them to build strong expertise in their chosen areas.
Alongside their academic studies, Sixth Form students take on leadership roles within the school, participate in co-curricular activities, and receive structured support for university applications.
Lower Sixth
Ages 16-17 - AS Level
The Lower Sixth represents the first year of the Sixth Form programme and focuses on AS Level study.
At this stage, students normally select three or four subjects that reflect their academic strengths and future university plans.
AS Level courses introduce students to the depth and rigour of advanced study while developing the analytical and independent learning skills required for A-Level success.
Teaching at this level emphasises:
• Critical thinking and academic discussion
• Independent research and extended writing
• Problem solving and analytical reasoning
• Subject specialisation
Students also begin exploring university options and career pathways, receiving guidance from teachers and school advisors.
Upper Sixth
Ages 17-18 - A Level
In the Upper Sixth, students continue their studies to complete the full A-Level qualification.
The final year of the programme deepens subject knowledge and prepares students for the demands of university study. Academic expectations are high, with students expected to demonstrate independence, discipline and strong analytical thinking.
During this year, students complete their final examinations and submit university applications.
Upper Sixth students also play an important role in the life of the school, often serving as:
• Student leaders and mentors
• House or prefect leaders
• Ambassadors for the school community
Upon graduation, students leave ESU with internationally recognised qualifications and the academic preparation needed to succeed at universities around the world.
